Gee "d" Discourse

Between the two different discourses, i would guess that people who grew up with strict parents with manors, education, but didn't not care to much for speech and how to talk "Proper" might experience some tough times when going into the work force. Yes this person will be a great addition, however because he/she did not talk right that might effect their chances.

For many people things like this would cause a lot of problems, not only because some people can not afford "Fancy" cloths but others who do not have the education but the experience to do that certain task. What gives people the right to judge one by the cloths on someones back, if person A had all the experience needed to do whatever was asked, but did not dress well that's an automatic disqualification? On the other side we have person B who did dress well and presented him/her self great, but does not have the experience, gets the job why is that?

  1. You bring up some serious issues regarding *access*. Obviously, we don't all have access to the dominant discourse--in fact, some of us are purposely locked out. What do you think we can do in order to challenge/change/dismantle the dominant culture?

  2. you bring up an excellent point. some people may not have been raised around the "proper" way of acting and they will definitely experience some difficulties when having to transition into living in the real world.

  3. I agree with you because it's crazy how people would say don't judge others, and don't judge a book by its cover and this and that........but we do it every day and in the most professional situations and I think that is very ironic.

  4. this is a great blog because i agree it is pretty messed up how people who dress fancy get the job but people who don't dress nice don't get the job.which is messed up because the person who doesn't dress nice probably is more qualified for the job than the person who did dress nice and if it was up to me i would give the person the job who is better at it not the person who dresses better because i want the person who is good at the job and dresses messy than the person who sucks at the job but dresses nice because to me its all about performance not flash judgment on how that person looks

  5. Mrs.D there is very little we can do to change the discourse, because it is ingrained into this society. Yes we can wish for a place that does not have this outlook in life. If the world worked out like that then what i would do is have a heavy consequence on employers who take things so insignificant into account. But we as people have been trying to change this in the work place but it just never works out. For example my cousin dropped out of highschool "A big NO NO" and he soon realized that he needs to go to school, so he went to a technical school to became an air conditioner maintenance guy. When he graduated the program he went to look for a job, the first one he went to he was dressed as he does every day. Not because he wanted to but he did not have cloths like what is expected when going into a interview. He did not get the job nothing was said upon why, it could be because he was inexperienced however, the man that got the job was the same position has he was. The only factor that changed was he was dressed well, the reason why i bring this up is considering that to this day corporation are not to discriminate people on their cloths, or their manor of speech. things like that just does not work out. Then again im not implying that all companies do this, i dont know i how many do but i surely hope not that none do. Im just saying that, as much as it pains me it would take a significant act, to change this trivial concept.
